About Lamanai

Lamanai Archaeological Reserve is one of the largest Maya sites open to the public in Belize. It is located in the Northern District of Orange Walk along the New River Lagoon. Archaeological excavation projects have been conducted since the 1970s by Dr David Pendergast, Dr Elizabeth Graham and many others as part of the Lamanai Archaeology Project.

Indian Church Village

Indian Church Village used to be located within the premises of the archaeological reserve until residents were moved a mile south in 1990 to give space for large conservation projects and tourism development. The remote village currently has less than 300 residents and has been somewhat hidden from tourists, despite the popularity of Lamanai amongst visitors.
