There is a growing need for authentic and cultural tourism experiences. Visitors are more aware of their cultural, environmental and economic impact when travelling and they want new experiences that make them agents of sustainable change.

Creating these “authentic” and “ethical” experiences might sound daunting, but the good thing is that you don’t have to do any major changes. Sometimes you can do simple things to start your journey towards becoming an ethical and sustainable tourism provider.

If you are a business and lost on where to start, below are some green tips for improving ethical experiences compiled by Ecomadic.

  1. Support the Local Community

  • Hire local staff and guides, and practice fair employment policies.

  • Participate in community development projects.

2. Protect Local Culture & Heritage

  • Implement smart interaction policies with cultural sites (i.e. natural, archaeological, sacred).

  • Do not allow the buying or taking of cultural relics and artefacts.

  • Educate guests on cultural norms of the destination. 

3. Minimise On-Tour Impact

  • Practice water conservation.

  • Implement green energy practices (i.e. carbon offset).

  • Opt for eco-friendly transportation options when possible (i.e. walking, biking).

  • Mitigate pollution (i.e. do not allow guests to litter, do not supply single-use plastic items).

  • Offer plant-based meal options on excursions.

4. Conserve the Natural Environment

  • Show and educate guests on the best practices to preserve the environment (i.e. 'Leave No Trace' motto).

  • Implement responsible policies if interacting with wildlife (i.e. safe distances, no feeding, no touching).
